İzmir Kız Highschool

Structure of İzmir Kız Highschool attributes to end of the 19th century and the begining of 20th century. Construction of the building is started in 1919, it take into action in 1923.

Today İzmir Kız Highshool is known as one of the first educational institutions and it is in the important structures of the republic with features comes from its history. İzmir Kız Highschool is first girl school in İzmir and it is one of first educational institutions in Republic period. It carries the traces of period's conditions in its construction and its destiny.when we look from air view it looks like shape of H.

Construction is in 14,428 m2 building area and it made by stonewall. The building which is made by rectangular shaped face stones is covered with

hipped roof in neoclassic order. There is an enterance with overstairs which is supported by four pillars in the in the entrance of two fold buildings. It is settled on the pedestal to be higher than floor.

There are windows on entire frontal. The perception of symmetrical plan seen in two-story buildings, which is also one of the characteristics of early

period, can be seen in Izmir Kız Highschool. Form of marble covered part in the entrance is inspired from seljuk architecture's Crown Gate. İzmir Kız Highschool is among the officially registered structures of Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board.

History of School

Governor of İzmir Rahmi Bey started to build İttihat and Terakki school at the begining of the 20th century. After İzmir liberation, it has been used as Male muallim School for a while from 1923. Izmir kız highschool started the education under control of local authority with the name of inas idadisi in 1915, İnas idadisi which previously served in served in the building of an italian girls school on the rad to the cultural park, can not continue its education and closes due to the lack of sufficient students and the warriors. After greek occupation, in 1922 education began in an existing old mantion on the site of the current karataş highschool.

The educational instution named İzmir Kız Sultanisi is layed the base for İzmir Kız Highschool.İn 1923 it was also named by ministry under the name of izmir kız highschool. After the transportation of Muallim Mektebi to kızılçullu in 1926, this building became the property of izmir kız highschool thus the foundations of a modern educational nest are laid which the will educate young women who will be educated, luminary, modern, republican an example of a new turkey. Therefore layed the base of modern home of education for educated, bright, republican, girls to be a model for new Turkey. In order to gather the people who educated in İzmir Girl Highschool under a foundations, the society of "İzmir kız lisesinde yetişenler" was established on May 8,1933.

Beginning of the 1933-1934 academic year, there were many applicaations to the school. At that time its current number reached 725. The chemistry, physics and nature laboratories in the İzmir kız highschool were also in demand from surrounding schools. The building which was very spacious also contained a painting workshop, music hall and working room. It was converted into a boarding school for the first time 1923-1924 academic year. From the 1926-1927 academic year, it continued its education in the building where the current Namık Kemal Highschool is located In the 1936-1937 academic year number of student was 1400 and İzmir Girl Highschool was moved to building where it currently continuing its education.

By the end of the 1950s a refectory and classrooms had been added to the building.A two fold,fourteen classroom building added to the school yard with in ten years.The building is named Faik Eroğlu who served as director between 1965 and 1968. Due to increase in the number of students of the school which initially thought as a secondry school and highschool, the middle school part closed from the 1977-1978 academic year. It has been studying just as highschool since the 1979-1980 academic year.

Fire

In june 1985, a fire broke out in the main building of the school the main building, the upper floor (refectory, dormitory and classrooms) were compeletly burned down. During the past period the building has been repaired and re-teaching begins in all buildings since 1990-1991 academic year. During the 2000-2001 academic year, a historical decision was taken and the school was taken the status of Anatolian Highschool and switched to coeducational education. The fact that male students would also be accepted raised the question of changing the name of the highschool.but the ministry of education put an and to the search on this issue and explained that name of the school remained same. In the following year as part of the izmir metropolitan municipality's sport for education campain maintnance work carried out on educational sites that are considered as historical cultural heritage an wear out overtime.In İzmir Girl Highschool the necessary repairs and renovations carried out in accordance with the structure's characteristics and the school's garden organized.

In 2003-2004 although the name of the school was changed to "80.year Highschool" and this change did not last very long. The school began the next school years with its former name and this name dates back to the present day. Our school continues its education with approximately 1000 students in the 2017-2018 academic year.
